The story of Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Jimmy, Nail, Timothy Spall and Christopher Fairbank plus creator Franc Roddam, director Roger Bamford and award winning script-writers Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais recount how a tale of Geordie Brickies working in Germany took the TV world by storm.
When the show first hit our screens in 1983 it was a slow burner, the principal characters were played by virtual unknowns. The TV company weren't confident, some wanted to transmit it late at night, others wanted it dropped altogether. Gradually the show picked up viewers and after four or five episodes the British public realised what a gem was being offered to them, viewing figures rocketed and Dennis, Neville, Oz, Barry, Moxey, Wayne and Bomber became the UK's favourite builders.
The original Auf Wiedersehen Pet ran for two series and then the actors went their separate ways. Many years later in 2000, an appearance by Tim, Kevin and Jimmy as Dennis, Neville and Oz at Newcastle City Hall for the first Sunday for Sammy show was the inspiration for Auf Wiedersehen Pet's triumphant return to our TV screens. After a further three adventures the magnificent seven are no more but here on this 30th Anniversary DVD we discover how a cast of young actors who began the project as strangers became lifelong friends. Their acting skills coupled with Dick Clement and Ian la Frenais' sparkling scripts combined to create a group of unforgettable characters whose exploits on building sites around the world produced one of British TV's most well-loved programmes.
In September 2013, members of the cast, writers and crew gathered on Tyneside to reminisce and celebrate the show that captured the imagination of a generation and made it trendy to be a Geordie. Back With The Boys Again – The Story of Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Also on this DVD – Previously unseen footage from Sunday for Sammy 2000 featuring Tim Healy, Kevin Whately, Jimmy Nail and Brendan Healy. This sketch was the inspiration for Auf Wiedersehen Pet's return and has never been commercially released.
