Bobby Thompson was born in New Penshaw, in the heart of the North East Durham coalfield.
He left school at fourteen to work down the pit, where his experiences provided him with much of the material for his early act.
He left the colliery in 1931 to earn a precarious living with a concert party.
During World War II, he served with the Border Regiment, and afterwards hit success with the BBC series Wot Cheor, Geordie.
